Keeping Your Business Immaculate

When we installed a suggestion box in the entryway of our business, I was amazed to see how many customers responded. After we started going through the suggestions, we realized that there was one request that we kept seeing--the need for a cleaner store. We decided to make a few changes to keep our place cleaner, including hiring a professional cleaning service. The results were incredible. Customers started to comment on how clean our place was, instead of the need for dramatic changes. We also noticed a boost in our sales because customers felt more comfortable in our store. 3 Tips For Protecting Your Home After A Flood

by Lee Porter

Was your home recently flooded? If so, the actions you take in the first hours after the flood could have a big impact on how much damage you suffer. Mold and contamination can start happening as soon as water gets in your home. If you don't take action quickly, your home could suffer even more devastating damage as water soaks into your walls, flooring, and more. However, if you take quick action, you may be able to prevent that damage from happening. Here are a few tips to help you get through the first few hours after a flood:

Safeguard the home. Before you start doing anything in the flooded area, make sure the home is safe. Look for debris or any dangerous materials that may have come in with the water. Also, turn off the power in the home. You probably know that electricity and water don't mix. The best way to protect yourself is to turn off power at the circuit box. Even if power is out in the area, still turn off the breaker. If power were to come back on while you're in the flooded area, you could suffer serious injuries.

Remove as much water as you can. The more moisture you can get out of the home, the better your odds at preventing mold and other long-term damage. If you have standing water, your best option may be to use a portable sump pump, which you can find at any hardware store. You simply put the pump in the water and it starts to remove it. You'll need to dump the pump tank regularly to keep it working.

Once the standing water is removed, you'll need to remove remaining moisture from the flooded area. You probably have water soaked into your carpet and behind your drywall and even have moisture in the air. A wet-dry vacuum can help you remove moisture from carpeting, but depending on how much flooding you have a vacuum may not take care of it all. Commercial fans and a dehumidifier can also help to remove moisture. You could also cut holes in the wet parts of the drywall to drain water out from behind the walls.

Before you do any water removal, though, make sure you take pictures of everything. Your insurance company will likely want to see the extent of the damage before you started cleanup efforts.

Eliminate areas of mold growth. Mold often grows in tight, confined spaces where moisture can get packed into the air. Look for those areas where mold could grow and eliminate those spots. For example, if you have an area rug over the floor, the space under the rug will likely be a breeding ground for mold. Get it out of the area as quickly as possible. Move furniture away from the walls so air can circulate. Move out boxes, clutter, and anything else that is restricting airflow.

Protecting your home after a flood is a big job. If you want it done right, you may want to contact an emergency water removal service (such as Walker's Carpet Care & Janitorial Services Inc). They can come out immediately and help you protect your house.
